Gifts for someone starting a new desk job

A new-job gift should be useful without making assumptions about the employer’s equipment or desk rules. A paper rack, coasters or page holders are possible choices when they suit the workspace. Ask whether the person has a permanent desk first.
Match the arrangement
Someone who shares a desk may prefer a compact personal item to a storage fixture. The magazine rack requires an approximately 26 × 18 cm footprint. Coasters need less space but may be unnecessary where drinks are restricted.
Check whether the desk is permanent
Someone working at a shared or rotating desk may prefer an item that travels easily. A larger rack is more suitable when there is a stable space for it. Ask about workplace rules before giving an accessory that assumes a particular arrangement.

Keep the message personal
A note about the opportunity matters more than a claim that an accessory will make them successful. Check office policies and the recipient’s preferences before choosing.
The gift decision
Celebrate the person while giving them control over their new workspace.
